Two Middleton School District trustees step down following resignation of superintendent
After two Middleton School District trustees resigned this week, not long after the recent resignation of the superintendent, the remaining trustees are declining to comment, instead focusing on the upcoming school year.
Middleton Superintendent Sherawn Reberry resigned on June 2, effective immediately, after only 10 months on the job. On June 4, trustees Kirk Adams, Derek Moore and Aleisha McConkie voted to appoint human resources and communications officer Kristin Beck as interim superintendent, according to the district.
Briggs Miller and Marianne Blackwell, who resigned from their trustee positions Thursday, did not support Beck, according to a news release from the district.
Adams, the board chairman, said he would not comment, but reaffirmed his support for Beck and the Middleton School District leadership staff.
In a press release, the remaining trustees issued statements about the district’s future, but not the resignations.
“The board, the superintendent and the Middleton Education Association remain united with the goal to retain staff, adopt a balanced, but lean budget, and solidify the plan to move forward with a four-day school week,” Adams said.
Moore said in the release: “I have been in communication with the district staff. We need to keep our heads down and move forward. I don’t have a comment regarding today’s resignations.”
Others said they just wanted to focus on the upcoming school year.
“We are very satisfied with the administration team leading the district and believe that the best interests of our Middleton students will always be the No. 1 priority,” said Middleton Education Association President Dave Stacy in the release.
The resignations come in the same month as Middleton voters’ rejection of a levy request. It was the district’s fifth straight loss in a bond or levy election in the past three years. The district unsuccessfully proposed an increase in its levy from $1.31 million to $1.5 million per year for two years.
The Board of Trustees will next meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
