The Nampa Police Department arrested a man suspected of arson Thursday afternoon following a fire at a residential building near an elementary school.

At about 11:44 a.m., Nampa police officers and the Nampa Fire Department responded to a multifamily building in the 400 block of 15th Ave. S after reports of a fire, according to a news release. At the scene, police found an adult male on the roof of the burning building, and he admitted to intentionally setting the fire, the release stated.

Several occupants from the residence and neighboring properties were evacuated. Police said no serious injuries were reported, but multiple residents have said they are now displaced because of the blaze.

A 46-year-old Nampa man was transported to the police department for questioning, the release said, and was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson with occupants and possession of a controlled substance. The release said that during the arrest, officers found methamphetamine and THC on the man.

The residential structure fire, located near Central Elementary School, caused traffic delays throughout the day, police said. The school was unaffected by the fire but placed on secure status as a precautionary measure during the emergency response, according to officials.
