Coroner identifies victim in suspected road rage shooting in Meridian
Officials have released the name of the man killed in a suspected road rage shooting in Meridian over the weekend.
Police responded to 911 calls at about 12:39 p.m. Sunday about a shooting near the McDonald’s at 195 E. Central Drive, the Meridian Police Department said in a news release.
At the scene, arriving officers found a man dead and the alleged shooter.
The Ada County Coroner’s Office identified the victim Tuesday morning as 27-year-old Israel Castrejon Trejo, of Nampa.
The coroner listed Castrejon Trejo’s cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death as homicide.
Jacob Streat, 23, of Nampa, was arrested for the shooting and charged with felony second-degree murder, a charge that means the alleged crime was not considered premeditated.
He is being held in the Ada County Jail on a $2 million bond.
Law enforcement said victim was unarmed
Meridian police said a confrontation at the scene “may have been a result of a road rage situation or traffic dispute which took place on Interstate 84.”
There were witnesses to the shooting, as well as potential video evidence, according to law enforcement.
Streat allegedly fired more than a dozen rounds at Castrejon Trejo, who was unarmed, according to police.
“All of the witnesses are consistent in their accounts that the victim was never seen with a weapon, that he never attempted to pull the defendant from his truck or physically strike out at the defendant, and that he was retreating as he was being shot,” a prosecuting attorney said at Streat’s arraignment Monday.
The prosecuting attorney also noted that Streat received a previous driving-related charge in August. He was arrested on suspicion of driving more than 100 miles per hour on the freeway without his lights on and changing lanes without signaling.
Police are seeking additional witnesses who may have seen what happened in Sunday’s incident.
The vehicles involved were a silver 2023 Toyota Tacoma and a blue 2009 Honda Accord, police said. The vehicles may have been traveling east on Interstate 84 between Nampa and Meridian at about 12:30 p.m. Police asked anyone who may have information to contact them at 208-888-6678.
