Meridian man entered plea in ex-girlfriend’s shooting. Here’s how long he’ll be in prison

A Meridian man will spend at least 10 years in prison in the shooting of his ex-girlfriend last year.

Daniel Bondar entered an Alford plea in September to three felonies: aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and destruction of evidence. An Alford plea carries the weight of a guilty plea but means Bondar wasn’t admitting to the crime.

Bondar originally was charged with aggravated battery rather than aggravated assault. As part of the plea deal, his convictions reflect only that he pointed a gun at her, according to previous Statesman reporting. The initial charging document alleged that Bondar shot her.

The woman was dropped off at a local hospital, something prosecutors said Bondar did after going to her residence in March 2021 and demanding that she enter his vehicle. Ada County prosecutors said he shot her while driving near North Maple Grove and West Ustick roads in Boise.

According to a news release from the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday, Bondar has a “lengthy criminal history,” including attempted strangulation, aggravated assault and intimidating a witness.

Fourth District Judge Michael Reardon sentenced Bondar to as many 15 years in prison but 10 years fixed, meaning he’ll be eligible for parole after 10. Reardon also issued a 20-year no-contact order barring Bondar from contacting the victim.

“You are someone that society needs to be protected from,” Reardon said during the sentencing.
