A 29-year-old Oregon man was sentenced to up to 30 years in prison for stealing an Idaho man’s pickup truck and shooting him in 2021.

Third District Judge Randall Grove sentenced Gregory Escobedo, of Ontario, to at least 15 years in prison, with another 15 years that Escodebo could spend in prison, on parole or both, according to a news release from the Canyon County Prosecutor’s Office.

A 12-person jury found Escodebo guilty of five felonies in August: aggravated battery; unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon; grand theft by possession of stolen property; and two enhancements for the use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony and a persistent violator.

“There is no doubt in my mind that our community as a whole is safer knowing that the defendant will be in prison for a long time,” Canyon County Prosecutor Bryan Taylor said in the release. “He is the epitome of a career criminal who has no regard for the people he hurts or damage he causes. I’m thankful he’ll be behind bars for the foreseeable future.”

What happened?

On March 4, 2021, deputies with the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Old Highway 30 and Farmway Road to try to locate a Dodge pickup that had been stolen from a gas station in Payette County, police said.

The Idaho man got a ride from someone else and followed his pickup truck, and Escobedo, to Canyon County, police said. The victim confronted Escobedo and was shot. He was taken to a Boise hospital in serious condition, the Idaho Statesman previously reported.

Police later located the truck near Old Highway 30 and Willis Road, and after a short pursuit, Escobedo stopped and was booked into the Canyon County jail without any issues. Deputies said they located a pistol in the truck.

Escobedo is now expected to be transported to Medford, Oregon, to face five federal charges related to multiple carjackings, according to the news release and federal court records.
