A Boise man was sentenced to life in prison for rape after pleading guilty, according to the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office.

Joel Guerrero, 49, entered into a plea agreement with the state, which dismissed two other charges — forcible penetration and first-degree kidnapping — in the April 2020 case, the sheriff’s office said. Additionally, a pending video voyeurism case involving the same victim was dismissed.

According to a news release, Guerrero went to the Boise home of a woman he knew on April 27, 2020, and forced his way inside, where he held her against her will by “tying her up, threatening her, and repeatedly rap(ing) her.”

“Society cannot tolerate the substantial risk that you will re-offend in this sort of way again,” District Judge Jason D. Scott said during Guerrero’s sentencing, according to the release.

Guerrero had previously been convicted of multiple felonies, including aggravated assault, lewd conduct of a minor and witness intimidation in the last 30 years, according to the release.

Under Idaho law, rape is punishable by at least one year in prison and up to life.

“I want to thank the victim in this case for her courage and bravery throughout the court process,” Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts said in the release. “Thank you also to the Boise Police detectives who investigated this case, which helped my office ensure justice was served.”
