Idaho man arrested after standoff in Meridian ends with Ada SWAT team going into home

A SWAT team arrested a 47-year-old man late Monday night, ending a standoff inside a Meridian home.

Robert Wayne Berryman, a Meridian man, was arrested at around 11:30 p.m. Monday and booked into the Ada County Jail just before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. He was arrested on two felony counts of aggravated assault, and misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and resisting and obstructing a police officer, according to a news release from the Meridian Police Department.

Police responded just after 6 p.m. to a call regarding a domestic dispute in the 1700 block of West Claire Drive in Meridian. Officers talked with a woman who said Berryman had battered her before pointing a rifle at her as she fled the home. A witness told police a similar story, saying Berryman pointed the rifle at both of them.

After police arrived, Berryman turned off his phone and barricaded himself into the house, they said. This led to the Ada County Metro SWAT Team being called to the home, and efforts to negotiate with Berryman were unsuccessful, according to the news release.

The SWAT team entered the home and arrested Berryman more than five hours after police were first called to the home.

As of Tuesday morning, Berryman was still being held in jail custody.
