Former Idaho children’s coach sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for child pornography

U.S. District Judge David Nye sentenced a former children’s ice skating instructor on Thursday to 6 years and 6 months in federal prison for possession of child pornography.

Jonathan Schmidt, 40, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography. He was an Idaho IceWorld youth skating instructor prior to his arrest. Upon release from prison, Schmidt will be placed on supervised release for 20 years.

According to a copy of his criminal complaint, Schmidt admitted to police that he had been viewing child pornography for “many years,” and he knew it was illegal. Some of the children in the images were as young as age 6, according to the complaint.

He was initially arrested in August 2019, and the city immediately no longer allowed him at Idaho IceWorld. Schmidt had been a part-time coach there since 2009.
