Idaho State Police say a 28-year-old drunken driver caused an eight-car crash while driving the wrong way on Interstate 84 on Thursday night.

Police say Christian N. Salgado, of Nampa, triggered the crash shortly after 7 p.m., near mile marker 29 outside Caldwell, when he hit a 2017 Toyota Camry driven by Cristian Elorza, 23, of Ontario, Oregon.

The crash then triggered collisions with six other vehicles:

  • A 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse, driven by a juvenile
  • A 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Christopher E. Rodriguez, 27, of Nampa
  • A 2010 GMC Acadia, driven by Edison A. Kyle , 40, of Boise
  • A 2012 Mazda MZ3, driven by Cortney M. Hill, 32, of Middleton
  • A 2015 Ford F150, driven by Jeffery T. Howard, 46, of Middleton
  • A 1999 Honda Accord, driven by Geri E. Sawyer, 52 of Caldwell
  • A 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by Robi D. Salisbury, 22 of Caldwell

According to police, none of the drivers were injured and all of them were wearing seat belts. Both westbound lanes were blocked for about an hour, and the right lane remained blocked for an additional 45 minutes.

Salgado was booked into the Canyon County jail on suspicion of excessive driving under the influence and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.
