Boise man accused of hitting officer with car has conviction for 2017 assault on police
The 31-year-old man accused of stealing a car and striking a Boise police officer with that vehicle Monday has a felony criminal history that includes an assault on a police officer.
Police arrested Lantz H. Reeves, of Boise, on Monday afternoon after the incident near State and Fargo streets. He appeared in court Tuesday afternoon and his bond was set at $1 million.
The altercation started when police attempted to stop him to serve an outstanding arrest warrant. Reeves fled in his vehicle and officers began chasing him, according to the Boise Police Department. Police say that Reeves crashed his car into a utility box and then stole an occupied car. The bystander was able to get out of the vehicle as Reeves took it, and police say Reeves then intentionally hit one of the officers at the scene.
The officer was treated and released from the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Reeves faces felony charges on suspicion of eluding police, aggravated assault on certain personnel, grand theft and malicious injury to property.
At the time of his arrest, Reeves was on felony probation after being released from prison last November.
This is not Reeves’ first charge of assaulting police. In March 2017, he was charged with and later pleaded guilty to aggravated assault or battery on certain personnel. That stemmed from an incident in Meridian in which police responded to a burglary and Reeves was armed with a knife. According to a copy of the 2017 criminal complaint, Reeves threatened several people, including police, with the weapon, and refused to comply with officers’ orders.
Reeves was sentenced to four to 10 years in prison but was released after serving a yearlong rider program.
Reeves’ criminal history spreads across Ada, Payette, Elmore and Twin Falls counties, and includes convictions for forgery, aggravated assault, aggravated assault on certain personnel, and felony possession of a controlled substance, according to the Idaho Department of Correction.
Reeves also has had multiple probation violations for drug use, failing to comply with the mental health problem-solving court, failure to pay restitution and court costs, and failing to appear in court, according to online court records.
