‘Expect significant delays’: Traffic backs up west of Boise after crash on I-84
Two crashes were affecting traffic on Interstate 84 west of Boise during the afternoon rush hour Tuesday ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend.
According to the Idaho State Police, troopers were on the scene of a two-vehicle injury crash on westbound I-84 at milepost 40 sometime after 3 p.m.
In a Facebook post, ISP warned of traffic backup and instructed drivers to “expect significant delays.”
According to an alert from the Idaho Transportation Department, the crash, near Robinson Road on the Nampa-Meridian border, resulted in lane closures on the interstate. All westbound lanes were blocked and “some” eastbound lanes were blocked at Robinson on Tuesday afternoon., the alert said.
Drivers were being instructed to exit I-84 at Ten Mile Road in Meridian, according to Idaho 511.
No new information was available as of roughly 4:30 p.m., ISP spokesperson Aaron Snell told the Idaho Statesman in an email. Snell did not immediately respond to follow-up questions.
Traffic backs up on nearby east-west roads
According to Lt. Brandon Frasier of the Meridian Police Department, traffic heading west backed up to the Flying Wye Interchange in Boise following the crash. With westbound traffic diverting onto Ten Mile Road, Frasier told the Statesman by phone, congestion then spread to surrounding roads less equipped for the amount of traffic I-84 typically sees.
“Those roads are not made for that kind of volume, obviously,” said Frasier. “Every east-west thoroughfare is clogged terribly, from Lake Hazel (Road) to Chinden (Boulevard).”
Frasier said just after 5 p.m. that Meridian police were not aware of any secondary crashes or incidents of drivers traveling the wrong way on ramps to evade traffic, which he said can sometimes happen in these instances .
He also told the Statesman about a crash on I-84 at Ten Mile Road on Tuesday afternoon that was reported on Idaho 511 at about 2:15 p.m. “They weren’t back to back, but I don’t think traffic had recovered from the Ten Mile one before the Robinson one happened,” he said.
An Ada County Highway District camera showed that just after 6:30 p.m., westbound traffic no longer appeared to be blocked at Ten Mile Road. Cars appear to be traveling as far west as Black Cat Road, the cameras showed.
