Girl fatally struck in North End was Boise elementary student, district says
The Boise School District sent a statement out Wednesday saying that the girl who was fatally struck by a pickup truck late Tuesday afternoon in the North End was a student at Washington Elementary School.
The school district said in an email about the “tragic incident” that it was providing resources to the school community, with counselors available to students, staff and families. It did not say what grade the girl, who was hit while trying to cross Harrison Boulevard, was in.
“In moments like this, we are reminded of the vulnerability of the young people we serve and of the shared responsibility we all hold in keeping students safe — whether they are walking, biking, riding the bus, or traveling in any way on our city’s streets,” the email read. Community members have put up a memorial for the girl with flowers, ribbons and signs at the intersection of Harrison and Ada Street.
According to the Boise Police Department, the girl and pickup both were going west on Ada Street when they stopped at the intersection at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The girl and the truck both entered the intersection, and as the vehicle was turning right onto Harrison, it hit her.
Police said in a news release Wednesday afternoon that the driver of the truck, who has not been charged, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. However, a records check revealed that the man had a federal warrant out involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement, so ICE was contacted, and agents took him into custody, according to the release.
According to online ICE records, the pickup driver is originally from Honduras and is now being held at the Elmore County Jail in Mountain Home.
Police said the accident investigation is ongoing.
There is no marked crosswalk at the Ada and Harrison intersection. Idaho law states that motorists must yield to pedestrians at intersections, regardless of whether a crossing is marked or unmarked.
In its email, which was titled “A Message About Student Safety in Our Community,” the school district said that everyone shares the responsibility in helping to keep children safe.
The school district, which provides maps and safety guidance for students walking to and from Boise schools, provided links on its Safe Routes to School website.
The Ada County Coroner’s office will release the girl’s identity.
