2 Meridian police officers injured in afternoon crash. Other driver cited by state police
Two officers from the Meridian Police Department were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries Monday after a 19-year-old driver ran through a red light causing a multi-vehicle crash, according to police.
Just after 11:30 a.m., two officers were traveling through the intersection of Meridian and Franklin roads in a marked patrol vehicle when a silver Toyota Corolla driven by the 19-year-old struck the passenger side of the Ford Explorer, according to a news release from the Meridian Police Department.
The officers were traveling southbound on Meridian Road and the other driver was going eastbound on Franklin Road when he ran through the light, according to police. Idaho State Police, who are investigating the crash, cited him with a misdemeanor for inattentive driving, the release said.
The crash also caused the officers’ vehicle to collide with a blue Chrysler 300, which was also driving southbound, according to police. Both officers and the Chrysler’s driver were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Jordan Robinson, a spokesperson for the police department, told the Idaho Statesman in an email.
“The Meridian Police Department is thankful that the outlook on injuries to everyone involved is positive but want to take this time to remind everyone of the risks of distracted driving and the importance of giving their full time and attention to the roadway when operating a vehicle,” the release said.
