Firefighters extinguished a house fire in Meridian early Wednesday morning, but not before a family pet lost its life, the Meridian Fire Department said in a news release.

Fire crews responded to the blaze near Victory and Meridian roads at about 7:45 a.m. and said smoke was coming from various parts of the house, according to the release. Firefighters found no people in the residence during search-and-rescue efforts and worked quickly to knock down the fire. The family’s dog died but there were no human injuries or fatalities, the release said.

Kelsey Johnston, the spokesperson for Meridian fire, told the Statesman the house is a total loss. The fire department is still investigating the cause.

“Meridian Fire would like to thank Boise Fire Department, Ada County Paramedics and Intermountain Gas for their assistance with today’s incident,” the release said.
