12 families without homes after Thursday morning fire at Nampa apartment building
Twelve families are without homes after a three-alarm fire at a Nampa apartment building Thursday morning.
Nampa fire crews were sent to a complex on Orchard Avenue at 7:03 a.m. after reports of heavy smoke and fire coming from a third-floor apartment, according to Nampa Fire Marshal Ron Johnson.
Crews arrived and were able to control the fire by around 7:45 a.m., Johnson said. Firefighters from Nampa, Middleton, Meridian and Caldwell were called to the scene, as well as Canyon County paramedics.
The fire spread to three apartments, as well as into the 12-unit building’s attic. The other nine units in the building had smoke and water damage, rendering all 12 units unlivable. Johnson said members of the Red Cross were at the scene of the fire providing assistance for the displaced families.
Two firefighters were treated by paramedics for minor injuries at the scene and were released. Johnson said the injuries were along the lines of muscle pulls or strains.
Investigators believe the fire started due to an improperly discarded cigarette, Johnson said. An estimate on the cost of the damage was unavailable as of Thursday morning.
