Eagle man dies in rollover crash down Bogus Basin Road hillside Wednesday evening
Editor’s Note: According to updated information provided by Idaho State Police, the deceased man was “believed to be” 71 years old. That is a change from ISP’s initial report.
A 71-year-old Idaho man died Wednesday night when his truck plunged several hundred feet down a steep ravine on Bogus Basin Road, closing the roadway for several hours.
Idaho State Police is investigating the 6:50 p.m. wreck that killed the yet-to-be-publicly-identified man from Eagle, who was driving northbound on Bogus Basin Road, toward the ski area. His Toyota Tacoma pickup truck left the roadway at mile marker 9.5, about 7 miles south of Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area. The vehicle rolled roughly 300 feet down the hillside, police said in a news release.
The driver was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, police said. No one else was injured in the incident, and the roadway remained closed for about five hours, reopening around midnight.
Late Wednesday, the National Weather Service in Boise reported overnight fog and clouds near the ski area. Bogus Basin operates lifts from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and opens an hour earlier on weekends.
The ski area reported 4 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours, including 3 inches that fell after 5 p.m. Wednesday. Bogus Basin recommends only vehicles with either four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, plus snow tires or another traction control device such as chains, travel the tricky, winding road in winter conditions.
