Boise police search for 2 who dumped mattresses, trash on street near homeless shelter
Police are searching for two men who dumped a truck full of trash near a downtown Boise homeless shelter, forcing the city to foot the bill for the cleanup.
According to a news release from the Boise Police Department, a video camera caught two men backing a U-Haul truck into Cooper Court — a former homeless encampment on West Cooper Street adjoining the Interfaith Sanctuary, one of Boise’s two homeless shelters — around 7:30 p.m. Saturday before dumping mattresses, a washing machine, small appliances and other garbage into the area.
Police said the mess was too big for officers to clean up, and the city had to call in a cleaning service to pick up and move the garbage. The ordeal cost city taxpayers $800, according to the department.
Police said the truck also would have blocked people in nearby homeless shelters from getting emergency services if needed.
The two men face potential misdemeanor charges that could result in up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine plus restitution.
