Man charged with two felonies in suspected hit-and-run crash in Canyon County

A 22-year-old driver was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an injury accident after a man was found dead along the side of a Nampa-area road.

Christian Zumano-Aguilera was initially taken into custody by Nampa Police and booked into the Canyon County Jail on DUI charges at 4:34 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office received a report of a body on the side of Ustick Road near the intersection of Northside Boulevard at about 8:15 a.m. At the scene, deputies found a 66-year-old man had died. The body was found in a barrow pit, and the man appeared to have been the victim of a hit-and-run accident.

During the investigation, the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office was informed by Nampa Police that they had responded to a call earlier Sunday involving a suspected DUI driver who was reported to be driving recklessly in the same area where the body was found.

Detectives obtained and executed a search warrant for Zumano-Aguilera’s vehicle and said they found evidence linking it to the scene of the fatal hit-and-run accident on Ustick Road.

Zumano-Aguilera’s earlier charges of driving under the influence and failure to provide proof of insurance were amended to include felony vehicular manslaughter and felony leaving the scene of an injury accident. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Canyon County Courthouse.

The investigation is ongoing, and the identity of the victim has not been released.
