‘Compassion in action’: Trio saved 2 in submerged vehicle. Idaho police honor them
When they saw a vehicle plummet into Arrowrock Reservoir in March, three people nearby dove into the freezing water “without hesitation,” according to Idaho State Police Capt. Michael Winans.
Their actions saved two of the family of four from Star who were in the truck, and the heroes were honored during an ISP ceremony on Friday.
On March 7, a family of four from Star was traveling on Arrowrock Road when their vehicle rolled down an embankment and into the water below, a news release from ISP stated. The father, Keith Berger, and a toddler, Decker Berger, died in the crash, police said. But the mother and another young child were saved by the three individuals who risked their lives.
Paige Tekippe, Timothy Tekippe and Alan Kindall were awarded with plaques by ISP on Friday, with Winans saying they were being recognized for courage, selflessness and the commitment to the safety of others that day.
Winans said the Tekippes both swam to the sinking vehicle to try to rescue the occupants, and Kindall assisted in getting the two survivors to the shore. Police said in the release that their efforts saved the child’s life and directly helped the mother escape from the vehicle.
“Your actions stand as a powerful example of compassion in action,” Winans said to the trio, standing beside him to receive the plaques. “By placing the life of another above your own, you have demonstrated the highest ideals of humanity and have inspired all to hear your story.”
A GoFundMe was set up to help the family with costs for funeral and memorial expenses, as well as immediate living expenses. The fundraiser has brought in nearly $100,000 in donations.
The organizer of the fundraiser described Keith Berger as a dedicated father who loved spending time outdoors with his family. They described Decker as a bright and smiling young boy.
“They were deeply loved, and their absence leaves a hole that can never be filled,” the GoFundMe website says.
