Idaho gas prices are ‘soaring’ amid Iran war. How to find cheapest fuel
If your gas tank is running low, you might want to fuel up soon.
Gasoline prices are rising quickly in Idaho.
Gas prices usually begin climbing this time of year as stations switch to summer-blend fuel, which costs more to produce.
However, that’s not the only reason fuel costs are spiking, according to AAA Oregon/Idaho.
“Idaho drivers are facing soaring gas prices due to the Iran conflict,” the automobile association said in a Monday, March 9, news release.
Here’s what to know:
How much are gas prices increasing in Idaho?
As of Tuesday, March 10, a gallon of regular gasoline cost about $3.40 in Idaho, according to AAA.
That’s an increase of about 32 cents compared to a week ago, the automobile association said.
A gallon of gas costs 47 cents more in Idaho than it did a month ago, AAA said.
“Prices across the country are off to the races, but … they aren’t skyrocketing in Idaho as quickly as they have in other states,” AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde said in Monday’s release. “However, these days, that’s like celebrating the last banana to go rotten. It’s only a matter of time”
How did Iran air strikes impact gas prices?
As of Tuesday, the Strait of Hormuz was closed to shipping in response to air strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel, effectively halting all trade of essential goods from the Middle East through that narrow waterway.
The maritime trading port, which sits between Iran and Oman, “is one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints,” according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
The Strait of Hormuz supports 20% of the crude oil trade around the world, the federal agency said.
“The inability of oil to transit a major chokepoint, even temporarily, can create substantial supply delays and raise shipping costs,” the U.S. Energy Information Administration said on its website.
Crude oil prices recently surged past $100 a barrel for the first time in nearly four years, CNN reported.
As of Tuesday, Brent crude oil futures had dropped to $88.50 a barrel after jumping to $120 over the weekend for the first time since 2022, according to the Trading Economics website.
Will fuel costs continue to rise?
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the countries most likely to be affected by supply disruptions due to the Strait of Hormuz closure are China, India, Japan and South Korea.
The United States has federal oil reserves to help cushion the economic impact, the Trading Economics website said.
However, if the Iran conflict continues for an extended period, costs will eventually rise as a result of the shutdown.
President Donald Trump told CBS News on Monday that the “war (against Iran) is very complete, pretty much.”
Topping off your tank may continue to get pricier until the Strait of Hormuz reopens.
To conserve gas and save money, AAA said drivers should “bundle trips, avoid stop-and-go traffic and leverage fuel rewards points.”
What are current gas prices in Boise? Idaho Falls?
As of Tuesday, a gallon of regular gas cost about $3.53 a gallon on average nationwide.
However, Idaho drivers can find gas for less in most major cities.
As of Tuesday, these were average per-gallon prices for regular gas at metropolitan areas around Idaho:
- Boise: $3.42
- Coeur d’Alene: $3.48
- Idaho Falls: $3.31
- Lewiston: $3.54
- Pocatello: $3.37
- Twin Falls: $3.35
