Traveling for Labor Day? What to know about traffic, gas and weather in Boise
If you’re planning to travel for Labor Day, you’re not alone.
It’s expected to be a bustling weekend on the roads and in the air across the country.
“Many Americans are squeezing in one final trip before summer ends,” according to AAA, which said domestic travel costs — for hotels, rental cars and flights — are down over last year.
Whether you’re hitting the road or staying put, here’s what you need to know about Labor Day weekend weather, traffic and gas prices in the Boise area:
What’s the Labor Day weekend weather forecast in Boise?
If you’ll be in Boise over Labor Day weekend, you might want to have sunscreen handy.
It’s expected to be sunny, with highs in the upper-80s and low-90s throughout much of the holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service. On Labor Day itself, it’s forecast to be “sunny and hot, with a high near 90,” the weather service said.
How will traffic be in Boise?
Law enforcement agencies in the Boise area are bracing for plenty of traffic.
“Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year in Idaho,” according to the Idaho State Police.
The agency is teaming up with the Boise County Sheriff’s Office for an emphasis patrol at the end of the long weekend to target dangerous driving on a key route.
The emphasis patrol is set for Monday and Tuesday on Highway 55 in Boise County, state troopers said, noting the highway sees “heavier traffic volumes and longer delays” during the long holiday weekend as people make their way to the mountains.
Real-time traffic information for that road and others is available through Idaho 511
What are the best and worst times to drive over Labor Day?
If you intend to hop in a car and drive somewhere for Labor Day, you may want to get an early start, according to AAA. On Saturday, in particular, “the earlier, the better,” the auto association said, citing the transportation data company INRIX.
“Traffic congestion worsens as the day progresses. The worst times to drive over the holiday weekend are typically in the afternoon and early evening. Saturday is expected to be extra busy with many drivers heading out of town or taking day trips,” AAA said.
How are gas prices in Boise?
Gas prices have stayed low nationally this summer, AAA said, and “barring a tropical storm or hurricane affecting Gulf Coast refineries, gas prices should stay below what they were last year.”
The national average was $3.33 for a gallon of regular gas last Labor Day, according to AAA.
As of Wednesday, Aug. 27, the national average was 13 cents cheaper at $3.20.
In Idaho, gas prices are higher than the national average, with the cost of a regular gallon averaging $3.48 in the Gem State as of Aug. 27. In the city of Boise, the average was higher still, sitting at $3.55 for a gallon of regular gas as of Aug. 27, according to AAA.

When should I get to the airport if I’m flying out of Boise?
Boise Airport is anticipating an increase in travelers compared to last year.
Close to 47,000 people are expected to come through the airport between Thursday and Monday, a roughly 7% increase over last Labor Day weekend, Jennifer Kronberg, the airport’s communication and marketing manager, told the Idaho Statesman in an email.
“As always, we remind people to arrive early for their flights, at least 90 minutes to two hours ahead of time is a good rule of thumb,” Kronberg said, noting that travelers should make sure to bring their “REAL ID, passport or other acceptable form of identification.”
Information about airport parking, including how full the lots are, is online.
Kronberg recommended perusing the Transportation Security Administration’s What Can I Bring page if you’re wondering what you can and can’t take with you on the plane.
Kronberg also noted that the airport has some new shops, as well as some new food and drink options, including Idaho Tap House, The STIL, Turas Flights and Bites, and Waffle Me Up.
