3-year-old boy drowns after playing with family in Payette River

A 3-year-old boy is dead after police say he drowned in the Payette River on Sunday.

Deputies with the Payette County Sheriff’s Office were called to the river at around 3:50 p.m. Sunday after the boy went missing while playing in the water with his parents, according to a Monday morning news release.

The Sheriff’s Office, along with a number of other Idaho agencies and more from Oregon, began searching for the child quickly thereafter.

By around 8 p.m., the child’s body was located near the Highway 52 bridge by members of the Malheur County (Oregon) Sheriff’s Office. Later, the Baker County (Oregon) Sheriff’s Office dive team was able to recover the child’s body, according to the news release.

The Payette Sheriff’s Office said in a separate news release Monday that the Payette County coroner ruled that the boy’s cause of death was freshwater drowning.

Payette County authorities have not released the name of the child.

Agencies that responded to the search were the Malheur County Sheriff’s Office, Baker County Sheriff’s Office, New Plymouth Fire Department, Payette Fire Department, Ontario Fire Department, Payette County Paramedics and New Plymouth Quick Response Unit.
