Coronavirus: Idaho initial unemployment claims drop; over 200 cases reported Wednesday

Idaho’s initial unemployment claims dropped by 4% over the past week, according to the Idaho Department of Labor. For the week ending with Sept. 12, there were 3,672 initial claims for unemployment insurance, a decrease of 132 claims from the week prior.

Continued claims, which is the number of people who requested a benefit payment, also dropped. Labor officials say there were 11,510 continued claims in the last week, a 12% decrease from the prior week.

When looking at claims by industry, 16% of total claims come from manufacturing, while industries like retail make up 11%. Health care and social assistance, as well as administrative and support services are industries that each made up 11% of total claims.

By age, 23% of total claims were filed by people ages 25 to 34. People ages 35 to 44 made up 22% of claims in the previous week, and those from ages 45 to 54 made up 20% of claims. People younger than 25 made up 14% of claims, according to the Labor Department.

Over 200 new COVID cases reported Wednesday in Idaho

Idaho’s seven health districts reported a total of 207 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, as well as five new deaths.

Two deaths were reported in Canyon County, which now has 96 reported coronavirus-related deaths in total. Single deaths were also found in Ada (143 total), Jerome (7) and Nez Perce (21) counties, according to local health districts.

According to updated demographics from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, the deaths included two people older than 80. The other deaths were said to be one person in their 40s, one in their 60s and one in their 70s.

As of Wednesday, 430 people in Idaho have died due to the coronavirus.

For the new cases reported Wednesday, Ada and Canyon counties each reported 44 new confirmed cases, leaving the counties with 11,153 and 7,326 cases respectively.

Other counties in Idaho reporting double-digit totals consist of Kootenai (18 new), Bonneville (17), Madison (12) and Bingham (11).

Since the pandemic began, Idaho has 33,518 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. IDHW also reported 76 new “probable” cases on Wednesday, bringing that total to 2,939.

IDHW also reports that 280,426 coronavirus tests have been taken around the state, with roughly 12% of tests returning positive.

Coronavirus cases have been reported in all of Idaho’s 44 counties: Ada 11,153, Adams 25, Bannock 849, Bear Lake 41, Benewah 130, Bingham 764, Blaine 596, Boise 51, Bonner 252, Bonneville 1,870, Boundary 47, Butte 26, Camas 12, Canyon 7,326, Caribou 73, Cassia 559, Clark 22, Clearwater 25, Custer 44, Elmore 252, Franklin 76, Fremont 128, Gem 241, Gooding 216, Idaho 76, Jefferson 366, Jerome 617, Kootenai 2,376, Latah 280, Lemhi 54, Lewis 11, Lincoln 67, Madison 322, Minidoka 563, Nez Perce 358, Oneida 19, Owyhee 293, Payette 698, Power 193, Shoshone 209, Teton 123, Twin Falls 1,734, Valley 80, Washington 301.

Community spread has been found in nearly all Idaho counties, with the exceptions of Adams, Butte and Franklin counties.
