Ada County’s COVID average drops; long-term care facilities see decrease in active cases

Ada County’s 14-day moving average of new confirmed cases of COVID-19 dropped below 50 cases per day on Friday for the first time since late June.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare added 39 new confirmed cases in Ada County for a 14-day average of 48.7 cases per day. Ada County was last below 50 cases per day on June 24.

The state’s seven health districts reported a combined 287 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus on Friday, increasing the state’s total to 32,538 cases since the start of the pandemic. With seven new deaths from COVID-19 announced on Friday, the statewide death toll grew to 414. Ada County added two new deaths (140 total), while Bonneville, Canyon, Kootenai, Madison and Minidoka counties each reported one fatality.

Eastern Idaho Public Health said the Bonneville County death was a male in his 90s, and the first death in Madison County was a female in her 80s. According to updated demographics for four of the other deaths on Health and Welfare’s website, one was in their 60s and three were 80 or older.

In addition to Ada County, eight other counties saw their caseloads increase by double figures: Bannock (13 new, 812 total), Bonneville (58 new, 1,759 total), Canyon (31 new, 7,216 total), Gem (10 new, 229 total), Jefferson (11 new, 341 total), Kootenai (12 new, 2,314 total), Nez Perce (21 new, 346 total) and Twin Falls (15 new, 1,668 total).

The other counties reporting new confirmed cases Friday were Bingham (4 new, 674 total), Boise (2 new, 52 total), Bonner (7 new, 238 total), Butte (1 new, 29 total), Caribou (6 new, 63 total), Clark (1 new, 20 total), Custer (9 new, 44 total), Franklin (2 new, 66 total), Fremont (3 new, 120 total), Gooding (1 new, 212 total), Idaho (3 new, 53 total), Jerome (4 new, 597 total), Latah (6 new, 264 total), Lewis (2 new, 11 total), Lincoln (2 new, 67 total), Madison (9 new, 266 total), Minidoka (1 new, 544 total), Owyhee (1 new, 287 total), Payette (3 new, 669 total), Power (4 new, 174 total), Shoshone (2 new, 206 total), Teton (2 new, 122 total) and Washington (2 new, 296 total).

There are an additional 2,722 probable cases statewide (48 new). The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare estimated Friday that of those infected, 18,052 people are presumed recovered.

Long-term care update

Health and Welfare released its weekly update on COVID-19 in long-term care facilities Friday.

Outbreaks at Idaho facilities increased by four to 162 overall, total individual cases jumped by 105 to 2,297 cases, and deaths rose by 15 to 227, with two new facilities recording a death.

Active cases decreased to 1,629 at 77 facilities — down from 1,711 at 94 facilities last week. There are 85 facilities with resolved outbreaks.

Overall hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 1,569 hospitalizations of people with COVID-19, 412 admissions to the ICU and 2,348 health care workers infected. Hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.

St. Luke’s Health System: As of Sept. 10, the health system was reporting 29 patients in its hospitals with confirmed COVID-19 out of 468 patients overall. The health system reported a 14-day coronavirus test positivity rate of 7%.

Saint Alphonsus Health System: As of Sept. 10, the health system was reporting 31 patients in its hospitals with confirmed COVID-19 out of 389 patients overall. The health system reported a 14-day coronavirus test positivity rate of 13.1%.

Boise School District: The district says the following schools have reported confirmed COVID-19 cases among students or staff since Aug. 17: Adams Elementary (2 cases), Boise Online School (1), Borah High (3), Hillcrest Elementary (1), Maple Grove Elementary (1), Roosevelt Elementary (1) and West Junior High (1).

Testing totals: At the end of the day Friday, Health and Welfare reported that 272,888 tests had been completed statewide. About 11.9% of those have been positive for COVID-19.
