Idaho follows record-setting day with its 2nd-most coronavirus cases; Canyon spikes again
Idaho’s local health districts reported 289 new confirmed COVID-19 cases Tuesday, continuing the state’s recent surge.
Tuesday’s total ranks as the second highest since the coronavirus first appeared in Idaho. And it’s the sixth time in the last eight reported days Idaho has topped 200 new cases.
It fell short of the record of 472 Idaho reported on Monday, which also includes some cases from Sunday when the state didn’t update data.
Tuesday brought the state’s total confirmed cases up to 5,559, a 40% increase from one week ago and a 74% increase from two weeks ago.
Ada County continued to lead the way with 99 new confirmed cases, according to Central District Health. But neighboring Canyon County wasn’t far behind.
Canyon County set a new record for the second straight day — and the third time in the past week — with 91 new confirmed cases. It reported 67 cases Monday, besting its previous record of 54 on June 24.
Home to communities like Nampa, Caldwell and Middleton, Canyon County has the second-most confirmed COVID-19 cases (775) in the state. And 340 of them (44%) have come in the past seven days.
Payette County also set a single-day record with 14 new confirmed cases, bringing its total to 82.
Other counties with new cases include: Adams (1 new, 10 total), Bannock (2 new, 91 total), Bingham (2 new, 43 total), Blaine (2 new, 523 total), Bonner (1 new, 30 total), Bonneville (3 new, 80 total), Cassia (7 new, 215 total), Elmore (3 new, 58 total), Fremont (1 new, 6 total), Gem (3 new, 22 total), Jerome (2 new, 205 total), Kootenai (26 new, 255 total), Latah (2 new, 16 total), Madison (2 new, 26 total), Minidoka (8 new, 159 total), Nez Perce (1 new, 83 total), Owyhee (2 new, 29 total), Teton (2 new, 16 total), Twin Falls (13 new, 504 total) and Washington (2 new, 92 total).
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reported 564 “probable cases,” an increase of 24 since Monday. It also reported 4,233 cases are “presumed recovered.”
Health and Welfare also reported 18 new cases among health care workers, eight new cases that required hospitalization and two new admissions to intensive care.
(Note: The Idaho Statesman’s Tuesday case total is significantly lower than the state’s because many cases reported Monday by the health districts weren’t included in the state’s count until Tuesday.)
