Idaho again reports record number of confirmed coronavirus cases; total eclipses 5,000
Idaho’s seven health districts reported a record 472 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus Monday, and the state’s total eclipsed 5,000.
Monday’s totals, which include test results that came back on Sunday, shattered the previous record of 277, which was set on Friday. The total number of cases in the state stands at 5,270.
Ada County added 217 new cases over two days, continuing the record surge that led Central District Health officials to move the county back to Stage 3 of the state’s original reopening process, meaning bars had to shutter.
On Friday, Ada reported a then-record 186 new cases. It followed with 44 on Saturday. Idaho’s most populated county leads the state with 1,940 cases.
Canyon County reported a record 67 cases Monday and extended its total to 684, second-most in the state. Kootenai County, home to Coeur d’Alene, added 43, shattering its previous record of 19 and leaving it with 229 total.
Community transmission has been confirmed in Kootenai, Bonner and Benewah counties, and Kootenai has reported 56 new cases of COVID-19 since Saturday.
On Monday, leaders from the Panhandle Health District, Bonner General Health and Kootenai Health connected the spike in cases to businesses opening and relaxed social restrictions.
Contact tracing has shown the majority of the cases are a result of social situations where few precautions were taken, according to a press release sent out Monday by PHD.
“The guidance continues to remain the same in combating this virus,” Panhandle Health director Lora Whalen said in the release. “Everyone who can, should be wearing a cloth face covering when out in public. Keeping a 6-foot distance between yourself and others is also very important. Lastly, hand washing and sanitizing high-touch surfaces is recommended.”
Two counties (Bear Lake and Oneida) reported their first cases of COVID-19, and also on Monday, community spread was confirmed in Oneida.
The counties reporting new cases on Monday were: Ada (217 new, 1,940 total) Bannock ( 5 new, 89 total), Bear Lake (1 new, 1 total), Bingham (4 new, 41 total), Blaine (4 new, 521 total), Boise (2 new, 4 total), Bonner (5 new, 29 total), Bonneville (4 new, 77 total), Canyon (67 new, 684 total), Cassia (26 new, 208 total), Elmore (4 new, 55 total), Franklin (2 new, 24 total), Fremont (1 new, 5 total), Gem (3 new, 19 total), Gooding (3 new, 55 total), Idaho ( 1 new, 4 total), Jerome (4 new, 203 total), Kootenai (43 new, 229 total), Latah (3 new, 14 total), Madison (1 new, 24 total), Minidoka (19 new, 151 total), Nez Perce (1 new, 82 total), Oneida (2 new, 2 total), Owyhee (5 new, 27 total), Payette (8 new, 68 total), Power (1 new, 16 total), Twin Falls (31 new, 491 total), Valley (3 new, 13 total) and Washington (2 new, 90 total).
There are 540 “probable cases” in the state, an increase of 11 since Saturday. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reports that 4,073 cases are “presumed recovered.”
