Idaho adds more coronavirus cases this week than all of May; new death in Jerome County

For the ninth time in the past 10 days, Idaho added more than 100 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

Based on data collected from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and the Eastern Idaho Public Health, there were 116 additional cases reported Saturday for a statewide total of 4,798 since the pandemic began.

Health and Welfare also announced the fourth coronavirus-related death in Jerome County, which is the 92nd death overall in the state. The latest death was a female older than 80, according to demographic information posted on Health and Welfare’s website.

During the past six days, Idaho twice set single-day case records, culminating with 277 cases on Friday. There have been 1,213 confirmed cases added this week compared to 720 the entire month of May.

BEHIND THE STORY

Why our case numbers might differ from the state's

The Idaho Statesman is tabulating confirmed coronavirus cases from Idaho’s seven health districts as they’re reported. The health districts report cases on their own schedules — some issue press releases, some simply update totals on their websites. And the reports happen at various times throughout the day.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, meanwhile, updates its statewide numbers once a day at about 5 p.m. Its numbers only include the cases the health districts have reported directly to the department. In some cases, health districts have reported cases publicly but not to the department by the daily deadline.

We break out each day’s new cases by county and provide details on each case when available here.

Long-term care facilities

On Friday, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare posted its weekly update on COVID-19 outbreaks at long-term care facilities.

There have been 39 facilities with outbreaks totaling 374 cases, an increase of five facilities and 51 cases since last week’s report. The death toll remained the same at 56 among nine facilities.

Currently, there are 90 active coronavirus cases between 18 facilities. The facilities added to the active outbreak list this week were Payette Healthcare, Grace Assisted Living in Meridian, Cascadia of Nampa, Family Life in Nampa, Aspire-Fieldstone in Meridian, Caldwell Care of Cascadia and Aspire-Milliken in Nampa.

The other facilities with ongoing cases among residents or staff are Desano Place in Jerome, Monte Vista Hills in Pocatello, Cottages of Weiser, Garden Plaza of Valley View in Boise, Harmony Place in Twin Falls, Highland Estates in Burley, Maplewood Assisted Living in Hayden, Karcher Estates in Nampa, Shaw Mountain in Boise, Brookdale Parkcenter in Boise and Valley Vista Care in Sandpoint.

Nez Perce Tribe plans mass testing

Enrolled members of Nimiipuu Health and any employees of a Nez Perce Tribe entity are eligible for COVID-19 testing Monday at NMPH’s Lapwai Clinic. Testing will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. based on the availability of testing kits.

Testing for asymptomatic individuals will be done in a drive-thru format. Patients are asked to remain in their vehicles, and medical staff will perform swabbing. Turnaround time for results is anticipated at three to five days.

Symptomatic individuals will be rerouted to a parking spot and tested with the “Abbott ID NOW” analyzer, which provides results in about 15 minutes. The analyzer has limited testing capacity, so not everyone will be tested with the machine.

Nimiipuu Health says its goal is to test as many community members as possible. NMPH also is planning a future testing day in Kamiah. For questions about testing, call NMPH at 208-843-2271.
