Idaho adds more than 200 coronavirus cases for second time this week, passes 4,000 total

For the second time this week, Idaho cranked out more than 200 confirmed coronavirus cases.

The state’s seven health districts reported a combined 214 cases Wednesday to push the statewide total to 4,172 cases since the pandemic began. The 214 cases is the most in a single day, but just short of the 221 cases reported Monday, which also includes results from Sunday because the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare doesn’t update data on Sundays.

Central District Health confirmed the 23rd coronavirus-related death in Ada County on Wednesday. The latest fatality was a male in his 70s, according to demographic information provided by IDHW. The statewide death toll from COVID-19 is now at 90.

Gov. Brad Little will discuss the state’s potential move out of the four-stage Idaho Rebounds plan in a press conference at noon Thursday on Idaho Public Television. Central District Health has already moved Ada County back to Stage 3 to address an outbreak that has brought record COVID-19 case counts to the Boise area.

Why our case numbers might differ from the state's

The Idaho Statesman is tabulating confirmed coronavirus cases from Idaho’s seven health districts as they’re reported. The health districts report cases on their own schedules — some issue press releases, some simply update totals on their websites. And the reports happen at various times throughout the day.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, meanwhile, updates its statewide numbers once a day at about 5 p.m. Its numbers only include the cases the health districts have reported directly to the department. In some cases, health districts have reported cases publicly but not to the department by the daily deadline.

We break out each day’s new cases by county and provide details on each case when available here.

Ada County added 89 confirmed cases — the county’s second-most in a single day — to increase its state-leading total to 1,380 cases. Meanwhile, Canyon and Kootenai counties each reported single-day highs.

Kootenai County, which includes the cities of Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls, had a record 19 new confirmed cases on Wednesday for a total of 152 in the county. Panhandle District Health spokesperson Katherine Hoyer said the jump in cases is largely driven by community spread. The previous single-day high in Kootenai County was 10 cases on March 29.

Canyon County’s total increased by 54, surpassing the previous record of 30 set on Monday, according to Southwest District Health. Canyon County’s case count has reached 489 cases, which is the third-most in the state.

The other counties announcing new confirmed cases Wednesday were Bonner (4 new, 18 total), Bonneville (6 new, 72 total), Caribou (3 new, 13 total), Cassia (9 new, 165 total), Custer (1 new, 3 total), Elmore (3 new, 45 total), Jerome (3 new, 198 total), Minidoka (4 new, 117 total), Nez Perce (1 new, 79 total), Payette (8 new, 48 total), Teton (1 new, 14 total), Twin Falls (7 new, 443 total), Valley (1 new, 4 total) and Washington (1 new, 87 total).

There are 479 “probable cases” in the state, an increase of 20 from Tuesday. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reports that 3,610 cases are “presumed recovered.”
