Idaho’s South Central health district shows jump in coronavirus cases; death toll unchanged

The South Central Public Health District accounted for 17 of the 24 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus that were reported Thursday in Idaho.

After reporting just two on Wednesday, Twin Falls County led the state with eight new cases. With 286 confirmed cases, it trails only Ada (739) and Blaine (499) among the hardest-hit counties in the state, according to case counts posted by the state’s seven health districts.

No new coronavirus-related deaths were reported Thursday, which left the statewide death toll at 77. The number of confirmed cases in Idaho stands at 2,305.

The counties that reported news cases on Thursday were Twin Falls (8 new, 286 total), Jerome (3 new, 94 total), Canyon (3 new, 263 total), Gooding (2 new, 26 total), Minidoka (2 new, 21 total), Ada (1 new, 739 total), Blaine (1 new, 499 total), Cassia (1 new, 20 total), Gem (1 new, 13 total), Owyhee (1 new, 9 total) and Payette (1 new, 19 total).

There are 233 “probable cases” throughout the state, an increase of five from Tuesday. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reports that 1,720 cases are “presumed recovered.”

DAILY DETAILS

Hospitalizations: Health and Welfare reports that there have been 223 hospitalizations due to the coronavirus, 92 admissions to the ICU and 298 health care workers who have been infected. The hospital and health care numbers are based on cases with completed investigations into contacts, not the full number of positives.

Testing totals: At the end of the day Tuesday, Health and Welfare reported that 39,362 tests had been completed statewide. About 5.9% have been positive for COVID-19. According to IDHW, the state conducted its second-most tests last week with 5,207. That trails only March 29-April 4, when the state conducted 5,582.

Counties with community spread: Ada, Bannock, Bingham, Blaine, Bonneville, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Jefferson, Jerome, Kootenai, Lemhi, Owyhee, Madison, Minidoka, Payette, Teton and Twin Falls.
