  • Municipal partners with EōS Fitness, which targets four separate Idaho sites.
  • First local openings expected by 2027, pending permits and construction timelines.

It’s 4 a.m. somewhere.

That’s Oscar-nominated actor Mark Wahlberg’s mantra when it comes to finding time for fitness — and the motto of his new gym chain, which he’s announced will be coming to the Treasure Valley.

The gym, called Municipal — also the name of Wahlberg’s fitness clothing brand — would bring “high-end luxury” workout and recovery options to the Boise area, according to Municipal’s co-chairman and CEO, Manzo Hodge.

Hodge told the Idaho Statesman that Municipal is expected to break ground on its first gym near Las Vegas in the next few weeks, and that Idaho would be next.

Municipal Gym is “a place to do serious fitness as well as to focus on your longevity,” said Hodge, a fitness industry entrepreneur in Eagle. Plans for the roughly 38,000-square-foot gym include a recovery room with medical offices, an infrared sauna, hydrogen cold-plunges, and cryotherapy, plus a cafe and juice bar and the opportunity for DNA testing, he said.

According to the gym’s website, it would include a 20,000-square-foot “training zone” (where the bulk of the gym’s fitness equipment would live) and 2,000 square feet of turf — intended to mimic a college athletic setting, Hodge said.

Hodge said Municipal has signed a lease for land in the Treasure Valley to build on and plans to “start filing for permits probably in the next 30 to 60 days.”

He declined to say where the gym would be located. He said, “The Valley is pretty small. … So, you know, to say Caldwell to Boise is not a big stretch, right?”

In a video announcing the venture, Wahlberg, 54, said Municipal is “where luxury meets fitness.” The Boston-born actor is a part owner of fitness franchise F45 and has been spotted in the Boise area in recent years complimenting a Boise State football player and promoting his Flecha Azul tequila.

“I have a home in Idaho,” Wahlberg said in the video, “and now, Municipal Gym will, too.”

Hodge said Wahlberg owns a home in Coeur d’Alene.

Wahlberg’s luxury gym to be joined by low-cost partner

Wahlberg’s announcement comes as another gym chain also plans expansion into Idaho.

EōS Fitness, a “high value low price” gym chain, is also eyeing the Treasure Valley, Hodge said. EōS is a fast-growing chain with over 175 gyms in the Southwest, according to its website. It was founded in 2015 when a group of Gold’s Gyms in Arizona, Nevada and California were acquired and rebranded.

The chain, which surpassed 1.5 million members in July, was recently acquired by private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners, after Reuters reported that a sale could value the chain at $1 billion.

And what’s this got to do with Wahlberg?

EōS will be Municipal’s managing partner, according to Hodge, helping to operate the new gym chain from “the sidelines” and acting as a “big brother giving some insight.”

EōS is also planning its own introduction to the Treasure Valley, including four EōS gyms, Hodge said. Hodge, who is a “vendor partner” for EōS, said the company has honed in on four sites — two existing buildings and two pieces of undeveloped land — but declined to say where.

EōS gyms are typically 45,000 to 50,000 square feet, he said.

The earliest that any of the five gyms, including Municipal, could come online would be 2027, Hodge estimated. From there, he said, both chains would just be warming up.
