Big retailers take advantage of Boise-area growth with more shops. There’s another coming

If you need an example of how fast the Treasure Valley is growing, just look at Nampa and Caldwell.

Though the two cities make up about 23% of the region’s population, nearly 31% of all new homes in Ada and Canyon counties were built there in 2023, according to the Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho.

Those homes and residents seem to have attracted the attention of national companies, including the Home Depot, which is planning its sixth Treasure Valley store near the intersection of Highway 20-26 and Interstate 84, according to permits filed with the city of Caldwell.

More retailers are jumping into the Treasure Valley business scene. The Home Depot site follows the opening of a Scheel’s in Meridian, an Amazon delivery center in Nampa and an IKEA delivery center in Boise this year.

This would be Caldwell’s first Home Depot. Others are in Nampa, Meridian and Eagle, plus two in Boise. The company’s big-box competitor, Lowe’s, has four stores: one in Nampa, one in Boise and two in Meridian.

The new hardware store at 4106 Hwy 20/26 would be northwest of the CBH Homes’ Delaware Park subdivision and south of D&B Supply, about a half mile east of the I-84 interchange at Highway 20-26.

Home Depot is planning its sixth store in the Treasure Valley and the first in Caldwell. The city has seen tremendous growth in population, and homebuilding, over the past few years. The new store would be built at 4106 Hwy 20/26, which is mostly farmland shown here.

The company has over 2,300 stores in the country, with the typical store averaging around 105,000 square feet, according to Home Depot’s website.

The new building would be slightly larger than average, with about 107,500 square feet plus 28,000 square feet for an attached garden center. The store would sell a wide stock of home improvement goods including tools, lumber and appliances. The company’s garden centers usually stock a number of plants, soils, pest controls and fertilizers.

The company, headquartered in Atlanta, brought in nearly $153 billion in sales during the 2023 fiscal year — a drop somewhat after the COVID-19 pandemic brought a surge in home improvement projects, according to Home Depot’s annual report.

The Caldwell store comes after the company announced plans to open about 80 new stores between 2024 and 2029, according to the report.
