Juneteenth is on Wednesday. Here’s what will and won’t be closed for the holiday in Boise

Wednesday marks the fourth year Juneteenth has been recognized as a public holiday at the federal level. The date marks when the last enslaved people in America were told they were free in 1865 at Galveston Bay, Texas.

Juneteenth gained federal holiday status in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth Bill into law. As a federal holiday, most government office buildings and programs will be closed on Juneteenth.

Here’s what to know about Juneteenth closures in Boise this year.

Will the post office be open?

Post offices nationwide, including Idaho, will be closed for Juneteenth. This means no regular mail or packages will be delivered on Wednesday, and there will be no in-person service at Idaho post offices.

Will Idaho government offices be open?

Idaho state offices are closed on Juneteenth and state employees will have a paid day off.

Will banks be closed on Juneteenth?

Most large banks nationwide, including Capitol One, Bank of America, J.P. Morgan, Wells Fargo, and Chase, will be closed on Juneteenth. Smaller banks may also close on Juneteenth, but they’re not mandated to do so.

Even though bank locations will be closed, you can still use ATMs at banks and mobile banking throughout the day.

What is open on Juneteenth?

Although Juneteenth is a federal holiday, most private businesses, including pharmacies and grocery stores, will likely remain open on that day. Here are some of the necessary stores that’ll remain open on Wednesday:

  • CVS

  • Walgreens

  • Walmart

  • Kroger

  • Albertsons

  • Target
