Rain and hail came down in Boise on Monday morning. What else will we get this afternoon?

Boise residents woke up on Monday morning to a rare sight in the Treasure Valley: a blanket of dark clouds and a stark departure from the usual sunny mornings we typically experience in summer.

Those clouds soon delivered on their potential, dropping heavy rain and pea-sized hail on downtown Boise around 10:45 a.m. An inch of snow had also fallen at Bogus Basin as of 11:15 a.m., National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Wojcik told the Idaho Statesman.

“We’re probably going to see showers like this off and on, and maybe even a rumble of thunder this afternoon,” Wojcik said.

The Weather Service predicts a 20% chance of thunderstorms on Monday night.

Wojcik also mentioned that the storms expected for the remainder of Monday are likely to be scattered, meaning some areas of the Treasure Valley may experience heavier rainfall, while others may remain dry for the rest of the day.

“It’ll just be scattered, off and on,” Wojcik said. “We’ve had one round now, and it may taper off, and we may be done after this; we may not see anything for the rest of the afternoon. It’s going to be hit or miss.”

The rain comes from a low-pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska. The system dropped Boise’s temperatures to as low as 46 degrees on Sunday and pulled in moisture from the Pacific Ocean, resulting in Monday’s rain.

But temperatures will quickly rebound once that low-pressure system moves out of Idaho by late Monday. The Weather Service forecasts a high of 72 degrees on Tuesday and a high of 94 by Friday.
