The latest proposed developments, other construction projects and new businesses around Idaho’s Treasure Valley:

Boise

Pivot North Architecture is requesting a conditional use permit for a proposed 48-unit apartment building on 0.7 acres at 1715 W. Idaho St.

The project, built by Shellan Rodriguez’s SMR Development, was a response to a request by Boise’s urban renewal agency, the Capital City Development Corp. The agency bought the lot after another developer dropped plans to build on it and began looking for someone to build affordable housing there.

Many of the apartments would go to households earning between $40,000 to $80,000 per year. The units would range from 450 to 816 square feet per unit and rent from $800 to $1,700 per month.

The hearing will take place at the Boise City Planning & Zoning Commission meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, June 14.

Franklin Spokane LLC is requesting a conditional use permit for a planned residential development on 2.5 acres at 5500 W. Franklin Road behind the former Crescent “No Lawyers” Bar and Grill.

The M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust is donating $492,000 to help the Wassmuth Center for Human Rights build a $3 million human rights education center in downtown Boise, adjacent to the existing Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial.

The new center will house a public meeting space and education center called the “Human Rights Classroom,” as well as a research library and conference room. The building will also offer a visitor center, gift shop and gathering space for people touring the Anne Frank Memorial.

The human rights education center will provide office space to the Wassmuth Center staff as well as a classroom that will serve as a home to professional development and several human rights clubs.

The Wassmuth Center is still raising the remaining $750,000 needed to build the center.

The Murdock Trust, based in Vancouver, Washington, was created by the will of the late Melvin J. “Jack” Murdock, cofounder of Tektronix Inc., an Oregon company that makes oscilloscopes and other testing and measurement devices.

A groundbreaking for the center is planned this September.

Caldwell

The Idaho Department of Lands will auction off 282 acres of unused agricultural land in Caldwell on Friday, June 11.

The two parcels are endowment land, designed to benefit the University of Idaho. The university is no longer using the land, so the state decided to auction it off, the department said in a news release.

Both parcels are designated for low-density residential use in the city of Caldwell’s land use map. The parcels are adjacent to Caldwell’s Vallivue High School and Vallivue Middle School.

Bidders must have $250,000 per parcel in cashier checks to qualify to bid. The auction will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Marriott Courtyard, at 1789 S. Eagle Road.

Around Idaho

The National Credit Union Administration approved an emergency merger between Desert Sage Credit Union, a financially struggling, one-office credit union in Nampa, and Mountain Home’s Pioneer Federal Credit Union.

Pioneer, which has 14 offices in Southwest Idaho, announced the merger in a May 25 news release. The approval came Feb. 19, and Desert Sage members transitioned to Pioneer effective April 1.

Leaders of Desert Sage, founded in 1953, began considering the credit union’s future in mid-2020. “In the scope of credit unions, Desert Sage is of smaller size, and as the market changes, it has become more difficult to maintain products, services, and technology that most banking customers today expect,” trustees wrote in a letter to members.

Paula Morrison, Desert Sage’s president and CEO for 20 years, died Feb. 21 after struggling with cancer.

Desert Sage’s office at 104 W. Finch Drive has remained open as a Pioneer branch.

Notable

Idaho Power has submitted a request to the Idaho Public Utilities Commission seeking two rate increases.

If approved, they would add $2.71 a month to the bill of an average residential customer using 950 kilowatts of electricity, effective Dec. 1.

A portion of the increase is tied to depreciation of the company’s assets, while the rest concerns accelerated depreciation of Idaho Power’sexpenses at the Jim Bridgercoal-fired plant in Wyoming. The company plans to exit that plant in 2030.
