After five rounds and almost 3,200 votes cast, we finally have an answer to the question the Idaho Statesman has been asking for the past month: What is the Treasure Valley’s favorite place to grab a taco?

With a comfortable championship round victory of 799 votes to 357, it’s finally time to announce the winner:

Treasure Valley’s favorite taco restaurant

El Gallo Giro

5286 N. Glenwood St., Garden City; 1435 N. Eagle Road, Meridian

What to know: El Gallo Giro’s downtown Boise restaurant closed in December 2020 when the restaurant’s lease ended during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to previous Idaho Statesman reports, Enrique’s Mexican Restaurant in Kuna also was called El Gallo Giro, causing a bit of confusion. The Kuna restaurant staple changed its name, after owner Enrique Contreras as its namesake.

El Gallo Giro opened in 1997 with the goal to highlight traditional Mexican cuisine. Today, owner Lucio Prado and his family continue to run two El Gallo Giro locations, one in Garden City and the other in Meridian, and both restaurants serve up Boise’s favorite tacos, a food truck and catering operation.

When it comes to choices, El Gallo Giro serves several different varieties of street tacos for about two dollars each that can be topped with cheese, grilled onions, and roasted jalapenos for less than a dollar.

El Gallo Giro also offers a combination platter, allowing customers to create a combo of street tacos with enchiladas, chile rellenos, tostadas or tamales.

The Runner-up

Andrade’s

4620 W. Overland Road, Boise

What to know: Andrade’s has been a Boise favorite since 2001, when it first opened on Broadway Avenue before moving to Overland Road. In 2020, it moved locations again, this time just down the road to a larger building of nearly 8,000 square feet.

Andrade’s offers 19 different tacos, such as carne asada, barbacoa and veggie, for just $2.95 each. Andrade’s tacos can also be mixed and matched with a combo deal, opening up the whole menu to customers who still want to experience an Andrade’s taco on the side.

Treasure Valley’s other favorite tacos

Although only one restaurant could win, the bracket started with 32 different restaurants, taquerias and taco trucks. Check out the results of the previous rounds below and see if any other local favorites pique your interest:
