The ‘Starbucks of Japan’ is coming, Boise — with matcha lattes, desserts, more

An Asian chain sometimes referred to as the Starbucks of Japan is expanding to the Boise area.

Nana’s Green Tea is coming soon in Meridian, according to the Tokyo-based brand’s website. Locally, city permits have been filed for a 1,374-square-foot location at 3075 E. Ustick Road, suite 120 — near the intersection with Eagle Road.

Founded in 2001, Nana’s opened its 100th store in early 2018. It launched its first location in the continental United States later that year in Seattle. Since then, Nana’s has gradually increased its American presence.

Positioning itself as a modern-day teahouse, Nana’s offers an array of lattes with bases such as matcha, hojicha (roasted tea) and red bean or black sesame paste. (Or, Dad, you can just order a good ol’ American coffee.) There also are indulgent Japanese parfaits and soft-serve ice cream desserts.

Nana’s menu brings a restaurant — or, at least, cafe — component to the game, too. Some of the food options include chicken karaage, a katsu sandwich and a chicken nanban rice plate with miso soup.

No specific opening date was immediately available.
