Select Boise restaurants are open Dec. 25. This one has free Christmas dinner

If cooking a meal at home isn’t optimal this Christmas, tasty alternatives are available.

Special-occasion restaurants such as Chandlers Steakhouse, or even The Modern Bar and Restaurant, will meet the moment with prime rib and more. Everyday favorites will be open, too — with and without Christmas cuisine.

For example, the Black Bear Diner chain will offer “holiday feasts,” in addition to a pared-down menu of its regular comfort food. And Boise stalwart Golden Star Restaurant plans to be open with a limited selection of Chinese food.

But one dining choice truly stands out for its holiday spirit: Chicken in a Barrel BBQ, still a relative newcomer to Idaho.

Located at The Boardwalk Apartments, 521 E. 41st St., in Garden City, the Hawaii-based barbecue brand plans to give away holiday meals on Christmas Day.

Chicken in a Barrel offers its “Free Christmas Dinner” annually — “a tradition that brings warmth and holiday spirit to families across the Treasure Valley, especially those who may need it most,” according to Shelby Lindsley, owner and CEO of marketing agency Savant.

“This year’s Christmas Dinner will feature a classic holiday spread, including turkey dinner, mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing, and pumpkin pie, all made with the signature comfort and quality Chicken in a Barrel is known for,” she said in a message. “In addition to a full festive meal, the restaurant will also be giving away toys for children, adding an extra touch of joy for families during the holiday season. Meals and toys will be available while supplies last.”

There’s no catch. You just show up. The promotion runs from noon to 3 p.m. on Christmas Day.

Spread the word, Lindsley urged — “so this event can reach individuals and families who may benefit from a warm meal, a welcoming environment, and a little extra cheer this Christmas!”
