Despite perfect 5-star rating, Boise restaurant closes ‘with a heavy heart’

A locally owned grab-and-go restaurant that specialized in fresh, health-oriented food has closed.

Hill’s Kitchen, which served takeout, offered catering and focused on prepared meals, has shuttered at 10697 W. Ustick Road in Boise.

Owner-chef Janel Hill, who ran the strip-mall business, made the announcement Saturday on social media “with a heavy heart.”

“This has been one of the hardest choices I’ve ever made,” she wrote. “Hill’s Kitchen has been my dream, something I built from the ground up and poured my heart and soul into every single day. Running it on my own has taken everything I have. Along with the way costs have remained high, it’s no longer possible to keep Hill’s Kitchen going without losing what makes it special.

“After five amazing but demanding years, it’s time for me to pause, take a deep breath, and focus on what matters most: my boys and my family. They need more of me than I can give while keeping Hill’s Kitchen open.”

Customers visited Hill’s Kitchen for foods ranging from salads, wraps and bowls to this asparagus and lemon ricotta rolled salmon.

Commenters online voiced understanding about the decision and expressed gratitude for the meal-prep service — but also were disappointed.

“Oh, I’m so sorry to see you go,” one wrote. “Your food was so delicious.”

That statement could be argued as fact, not opinion, based on feedback online. Hill’s Kitchen rated a perfect 5 out of 5 stars from 45 Google reviews.

“I LOVE that they make healthy eating taste incredible, just like homemade comfort food!” one reviewer wrote. “Clearly a key ingredient is love ...The quality speaks for itself. I will also add that my kids will eat broccoli from here, but never when I make it at home ... I add love to it, but that just doesn’t cut it sometimes! They also cater to my nightshade allergies, which I appreciate.”

In her goodbye statement, Hill — who even published a cookbook while running Hill’s Kitchen — thanked customers “for letting me be part of your lives.”

“I am beyond grateful for all the smiles and laughs, every order, every kind word, every bit of encouragement you’ve given me along the way,” she wrote. “Hill’s Kitchen was never just about food — it was about community, connection, and helping you put nourishing meals on the table. That’s what made this so special, and that’s what I will carry with me into whatever comes next.”
