Two Idaho sandwich shops make Yelp Top 100 list. (Don’t get cheesed off, Boise)

August is National Sandwich Month. (Who knew?) So, naturally, Yelp just released its inaugural list of America’s Top 100 Sandwich Shops.

Good news! Two Idaho restaurants made the list, which is based on Yelp reviews.

Weird news! Neither is anywhere near Idaho’s major population center.

Midtown Deli in Post Falls came in at an impressive No. 17. (Not so surprising, actually. The small drive-up deli is a past winner of Yelp’s “Best Sandwiches in Every State.”)

And E Street Deli in Rupert was named 95th best.

Sure, for Boise, it feels a bit like a slap in the face. With a triple stack of Boar’s Head ham.

But the numbers — and customer enthusiasm — don’t lie.

E Street Deli in Rupert is a lunchtime favorite because of its mouthwatering sandwiches.

Midtown Deli rates 4.9 out of 5 on Yelp from 133 reviews. “Great sandwiches with a ton of meat,” one gushes. Add another: “If this was New York ... this would be your neighborhood deli ... for the food and the banter.”

And E Street Deli? It has a 4.8 — from 93 reviews. Not just from locals, either. “I stopped in this town as a side trip off the interstate,” a recent review explains, adding, “... this place was AMAZING ... had a Spicy Peach Steak Sandwich that was incredible! Prices are VERY REASONABLE ... especially compared to everywhere else.”

Sort of makes you want to take a road trip, right?

The Boise area has plenty of locally owned sandwich shops. A few that come to mind include Lemon Tree Co., MB Sandwich House, Das Alpenhaus Delikatessen, Fat Guys Fresh Deli and Uncle Giuseppe’s.

If there was one that deserved a spot on a top 100 list, which would be your choice?

It might be time for Treasure Valley residents to eat their way through some research.

Speaking of that road trip — the No. 1 sandwich shop in America? It’s Franky’s Deli Warehouse in Hialeah, Florida.

Maybe it’s the, uh, colorful motto: “We keep your taste buds alive,” it claims, “the best six inches you’ll ever have.”
