A landmark bar and restaurant soon will fade into Boise history.

State Street Kitchen & Drinkery — previously known as the Dutch Goose at 3515 W. State. St. — closed permanently Tuesday.

The property’s Spokane-based owners have a different vision for the future.

“I think the restaurant business is getting tougher and tougher,” co-owner Matt Goodwin said by telephone. “We have plans approved to do a 43-unit apartment complex there that I think will be a great addition to the neighborhood.”

The cinder-block building will be torn down, he said. Construction is slated to begin in May, Goodwin added.

When the Dutch Goose closed at the end of 2020, it was a sad moment for Idahoans who had sipped beers and devoured finger steaks there for 27 years.

But the building was remodeled by its new owners and reopened the following year. State Street Kitchen & Drinkery served “upscale pub fare with a foodie twist.”

Some longtime Boiseans will remember it as yet another bar. Before it became the Goose, it was known as the Big Pine Lounge.
