This Meridian restaurant just closed with a ‘heavy heart.’ Prepare to get ‘tipsy’ now

A longtime breakfast destination has closed in Meridian — and changed ownership.

Ed’s 50s Cafe, 979 S. Progress Ave., is no more. It is transitioning into Tipsy Chef Cafe, a new restaurant.

In a late-January message online, Ed’s explained that new owners would take over the space Feb. 1.

“Over the past 9 1/2 years, we have been blessed with the opportunity to serve each of you, and form relationships and friendships with our customers. ... At this time, Ed, Cindy and Charity have decided to pass on the torch to Julie and Travis. Our hope is that you welcome them with open arms, as you so graciously did for us.”

As its name suggested, Ed’s was an old-school sort of spot. It specialized in home-style breakfast, burgers, melts and sandwiches at modest prices.

Tipsy Chef Cafe, which says it’s “coming soon,” hasn’t revealed a menu yet online. A phone call wasn’t answered and went to voicemail.

But repeated use of the hashtag “#foodie” online hints at something ambitious. (And, based on the name, paired with wine?)

Chef and owner Julie Gatez-Wilmot is a French- and Michelin-trained chef, her Tipsy Chef profile says on Instagram. Her resume includes chef experience at Gino’s Italian Ristorante in Meridian, according to Tipsy Chef’s Facebook page.

Prior to announcing this restaurant, Tipsy Chef has offered private chef and catering services in the Boise area.
