This spendy Boise bar serves ‘good ice’ in the ‘right glass.’ It’s closing

A downtown Boise bar specializing in high-end cocktails is saying goodbye after six years that culminated in financial struggles.

Water Bear Bar, which is for sale at 350 N. 9th St., plans to close Saturday. “It’s been a long time coming,” the stylish lounge announced on Instagram, “and we tried everything we possibly could to keep this special little place around for y’all. It’s just not feasible.”

This spring, the locally owned business launched a $100,000 online fundraising goal that raised $11,177. “Save Water Bear Bar,” its Indiegogo page declared. “A queer bar in Boise, Idaho.”

Serving a menu of mixed drinks that range from $13 to $29 — many in the $15 to $18 range with tax — Water Bear Bar targets a clientele willing to pay extra for creativity and philosophy. It is far from the only downtown Boise lounge where craft cocktail prices sometimes shock wallets, but Water Bear Bar embraces its upscale dynamic. An 18% service charge is included on every check. “Gratuities are always welcomed for excellent service,” Water Bear adds on its website.

“We emphasize high quality ingredients, balanced drinks, strong technique, and attention to details like ‘good ice’ and the right glass,” Water Bear says online. It also serves oysters, small plates and bar snacks.

To pay back rent, Water Bear Bar plans to hold a handful of special events, including a Halloween party, through the end of the year. A farewell events calendar has been posted on its website.

During its last-hurrah week, Water Bear Bar’s planned hours are 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 4 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

Responding to the farewell announcement, one commenter proclaimed “You will be missed!” — and praised Water Bear Bar for its atmosphere and vegan popcorn.

“The best thing we had in Boise,” another commenter wrote.
