Band with sold-out Boise show makes Obama’s playlist, singer calls him ‘war criminal’
Former President Barack Obama made his affinity for music loud and clear during two terms in the Oval Office.
So it came as no surprise Thursday when he shared a summer playlist of more than 40 diverse tunes.
“Like I do every year, here are some songs I’ve been listening to this summer — a mix of old and new,” Obama wrote on Twitter, trotting out tunes ranging from Bob Dylan and Ella Fitzgerald to Luke Combs and Boygenius.
What was surprising? How one of the musicians reacted.
Singer-guitarist Lucy Dacus, one-third of the indie-rock supergroup Boygenius, retweeted the 44th president of the United States with a two-word comment: “war criminal.”
Boygenius, which will headline a sold-out concert at the Idaho Botanical Garden’s Outlaw Field in Boise on Aug. 2, arguably is the freshest act on Obama’s list. The group released its full-length debut album, “The Record,” earlier this year. Boygenius also includes singers-guitarists Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker.
It wasn’t immediately clear what caused Dacus, 28, to flame Obama for including her band on his summer shuffle. The only hint was a sad-face emoji.
But it seems likely that her, uh, Genius tweet was related to drone strikes.
During his time as president, Obama green-lit 506 strikes that killed 3,040 terrorists and 391 civilians, according to a New York Times opinion piece titled, “Obama’s embrace of drone strikes will be a lasting legacy.”
Dacus’ tweet drew plenty of liberal support beneath it, and probably cheers from the other side of the aisle, too — misguided as they might be. After all, Dacus has called former President Donald Trump “an intentionally evil, bigoted man.”
On that note, there’s been no word from the always outspoken Trump regarding Dacus’ Obama-bashing tweet. The 45th president probably was too busy cheerleading country singer Jason Aldean during the recent “Try That In A Small Town” controversy.
“Jason Aldean is a fantastic guy who just came out with a great new song. Support Jason all the way. MAGA!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
How did we ever listen to music — or comprehend politics — before social media?
