You know him as a bloody serial killer, Boise. Will his concert here be killer, too?
When actors moonlight as musicians, most of us have an inherent tendency to react skeptically, if not cynically.
But let’s not grind any axes with Michael C. Hall yet.
At least not any he could grab and use to decapitate us.
Known for his role as serial killer Dexter Morgan on Showtime’s bloody “Dexter,” Hall fronts a band, too. It’s called Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum. And it’s coming to the Boise market — specifically, Garden City.
Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum will headline an 8 p.m. concert Tuesday, March 29, at Visual Arts Collective, 3638 Osage St. Tickets are $20 at Eventbrite.com.
This band hasn’t been around long. It formed in 2018. But with a self-titled EP and a full-length album, “Thanks for Coming,” Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum has grabbed a significant amount of media attention ranging from Billboard to The Associated Press.
Without question, Hall can sing. If you’re a fan of transcendent synth-pop, Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum might be right up your dark alley.
A December 2021 review of a small-venue show in England praised Hall’s “breathtaking, faultless vocals” that “just soared across the room.”
“The music was exciting,” the reviewer wrote for online publication Louder Than War, “with an electronic dance feel, definitely not written in mainstream song format. A variety of influences could be picked out, ranging from electro, metal, dance, new wave and ’70s/’80s disco. There were definite goose-bump-inducing, dark, goth-rock moments. It was mesmerizing, the incredible sounds pumping out and seemingly pulsating through the audience’s member’s bodies like an electrical charge.”
Here’s some additional marketing from the band’s bio: “Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum is a trio comprised of vocalist, lyricist, musician and Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning and Emmy-nominated actor Michael C. Hall (“Dexter,” “Six Feet Under,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”), keyboardist Matt Katz-Bohen (Blondie), and drummer Peter Yanowitz (The Wallflowers, Morningwood). A theatrical sensibility is part of the trio’s DNA, especially in live shows, having met several years ago on Broadway during the production of ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch.’
“Fueled by synthesizers and drums,” adds a press release, “Princess Goes To The Butterfly Museum is a swirl of glam, experimental, ambient music of David Bowie, Giorgio Moroder’s ‘70s disco productions for Donna Summer, ‘80s new wave dance music and contemporary electronic dance acts like Justice.”
Still, the band is led by an actor.
Consequently, starstruck “Dexter” fans reportedly sometimes lose their minds at concerts, screaming stupidity such as “Kill me!” at Hall.
If you’re going to the Garden City show, maybe try to control yourself? With “Dexter” on stage, the most uncool way to die would be of embarrassment.
