Words & Deeds

First, this radio station let go a Boise ‘legend.’ Now 3 other DJs have quit. What now?

When Mix 106 ushered out afternoon personality Kekeluv in August, many listeners were surprised.

After all, the radio station had called him a “Treasure Valley legend” on its website months earlier. He’d been a well-known voice in the Boise market for almost 15 years.

But change was just beginning. A major turnover of on-air talent has unfolded at 105.9 KCIX-FM.

Late-morning and early-afternoon host Mallory Moreno, who joined the station in August 2020, quit in November. And now Mix’s morning team, John Moug and Angie Morales — “Moug & Angie Mornings” — have bid farewell, too. Their last day is Friday. Moug joined Mix in January 2020; Morales started in July of the same year.

The duo gave notice at the start of last month, Moug said in a phone interview. After that, they landed a new job with a Seattle radio station, where they will move their show starting Jan. 3, 2022.

The decision to leave was not related to Mix parting ways with Steve “Kekeluv” Kicklighter, Moug said. Nor was the timing tied to Moreno’s recent exit, he said.

“It’s bittersweet,” he and Morales explained in a video posted on their Facebook page.

“In our case, Mix didn’t do anything wrong,” Moug told the Statesman. “We really enjoyed our time there. We really loved the community. In fact, I really feel like we built some great relationships with our audience.

“We’ve just been presented with an opportunity that has swayed us. Though in truth, we didn’t have anything locked down when we left. We just kind of had some feelers out at that point and took the chance, and it kind of worked out for us.”

Either way, listeners already are hearing a new voice at the station, which broadcasts a Hot AC (adult contemporary) format.

Former San Antonio radio host Chris Cardenas recently took over Kekeluv’s former slot from 3 to 7 p.m. weekdays. Cardenas also serves as assistant operations manager for the six-station Townsquare Media Boise cluster.

And more fresh voices would seem to be in the future.

What sort of programming should Mix 106 listeners expect Monday morning with “Moug & Angie” gone?

That’s a mystery.

An email sent to Townsquare Media Boise’s director of content — and forwarded to the promotion director the next day — was not returned.

It’s worth noting that Mix 106 is in the midst of its holiday Toy Drive. “Mix 106 has teamed up with First Federal Bank and the Boise Rescue Mission to help families in the Treasure Valley this Christmas,” according to its website. Idahoans are encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Dec. 16 at The Village at Meridian. The Toy Drive is outside at the corner of Eagle Road and Fairview Avenue.

“Stop by and help make a child’s Christmas wish come true!” Mix 106 posted on Facebook.
