Words & Deeds

This Boise theater just reopened — with all $1 movies. Here’s when others will return.

Although movie theaters were allowed to reopen last weekend as part of the state’s “Idaho Rebounds” plan, most stayed dark.

But there was one notable Boise exception.

Overland Park Cinemas, 7051 W. Overland Road, returned to action Saturday. The discount theater, which shows second-run films, also dropped its price. Movie tickets now cost just $1, a special normally offered only on Tuesdays. The theater’s $5 food deal — buy a $5 food coin for five bucks in snacks and a free movie — also is an everyday option.

“With all the world events going on, many families are struggling to find the resources to get away from the day-to-day grind and enjoy time with their family and friends. So we thought, why not make it $1 day, every day?” Overland Park Cinemas posted on Facebook. “Honestly, we aren’t quite sure how this will go, or even know if this is a permanent change, but we are excited to offer a lower price for the time being and to get your feedback!”

Abiding my state coronavirus guidelines, Overland Park Cinemas also posted that it will operate at 50 percent capacity. “We will also be asking our patrons to adhere to all relevant protocols, you know the drill,” the multiplex wrote.

Here are movies and daily times through Thursday, June 4:

“Trolls World Tour” (PG): Noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6:45 p.m. 8:45 p.m.

“Dolittle” (PG): 12:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m., 7:15 p.m, 9:20 p.m.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” (PG): 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4:40 p.m., 7 p.m.

“Knives Out!” (PG-13): 4:20 p.m., 9:05 p.m.

A second-run theater such as Overland Park Cinemas might be Boise moviegoers’ best option for a while. With few new movies planned for release this summer, major theater chains still have not announced when they might reopen. July appears to be the likeliest possibility. That would include popular area multiplexes such as Edwards Cinemas and Majestic Cinemas.

Parma Motor-Vu drive-in opened in late April and has a new release, “Mighty Oak,” scheduled for the next two weekends.

The regional Reel Theatre chain, which operates first- and second-run theaters in the Treasure Valley, is weeks away from reopening, business manager Eldon Sorensen said. Reel Theatre hopes to have a date figured out this week, he added.

Fans of independent and foreign films are back in business later this month. Art-house theater The Flicks in Boise plans to reopen June 26, owner Carole Skinner said.
