5 Things to Do This Weekend: See an ex-’SNL’ star do comedy, meet the ‘Boise Boys’ ...

1. See a former ‘SNL’ comedian

If you’re a fan of stand-up comedy, it’s hard to beat seeing a former “Saturday Night Live” cast member perform in a club setting. From 1996 to 2003, Chris Kattan unleashed outrageous “SNL” characters such as exotic dancer Mango and the unforgettable spastic primate Mr. Peepers. (So. Freaking. Funny.) Kattan’s recurring role as one of the Butabi brothers (with Will Ferrell) was even expanded into a movie in 1998 — “A Night at the Roxbury.” Kattan will headline Liquid Laughs, 405 S. 8th St., at 8 p.m. Thursday, 8 and 10 p.m. Friday, and 8 and 10 p.m. Saturday. (Note: The 8 p.m. Saturday show is sold out.) Buy tickets for $25 at liquidboise.com or call (208) 941-2459.

2. Hang with ‘Boise Boys’

Looking to improve your home? Check out the 20th annual Idaho Remodeling and Design Show, which takes over the Boise Centre, 850 W. Front St., from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. More than 100 exhibits will explore home innovations and design trends. Fans of “Boise Boys” on HGTV also have the opportunity to meet the show’s stars in person. Clint Robertson and Luke Caldwell will present a keynote seminar at noon Saturday: “Form and Function: The Foundations of Your Forever Home.” It costs $20, which includes access to the keynote, a meet-and-greet and photo opportunity with the duo, plus a two-day general-admission floor pass. Regular tickets to the Idaho Remodeling Show are $7 general admission, free for children 16 and younger, at the door (cash only) or at idahoremodelshow.com.

3. Rock out

Wearing illuminated tiger helmets, electronic trio Black Tiger Sex Machine will fire up dancers at 8 p.m. Friday at the Knitting Factory, 416 S. 9th St. Tickets are $30 general ($35 door), $65 reserved. TicketWeb. Opening: Blanke, Vampa.

Thirteen local bands and special guest John Lowell will get twangy at the Idaho Bluegrass Winterfest. It takes over Ironwood Bar & Grill, 5467 N. Glenwood St., from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday. A $15 donation is suggested. For details about the band lineup, visit idahobluegrassassociation.org.

The Boise Philharmonic will crank up the score to “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” while the film is projected on a huge screen at 1 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Morrison Center, 2201 Cesar Chavez Lane, Boise. Tickets to “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in Concert” are $54-$84 at Ticketmaster.

Country singer-songwriter Randy Houser will headline Saturday at the Knitting Factory. That show is already sold out.

Jazz fans will check out the James Morrison Quartet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and 8 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday at The Sapphire Room. It’s located inside the Riverside Hotel, 2900 W. Chinden Blvd. Tickets are $22.50-$55. Call (208) 426-3498 or go to boisejazzsociety.org.

4. Visit an indoor park

Feel like enjoying a picnic this weekend but not freezing to death? Visit the Edwards Greenhouse Pop-up Park, a temporary indoor retreat that opens Friday and runs through Feb. 2. There’s green grass (I was there last week — it’s lush), gorgeous flowers, a kids’ play area and other reminders of spring. It’s totally free to enter, and special events and vendors will drop by. (Saturday highlight: Local musicians Doug Brown, Rob Hill and Micah Defries perform from noon to 2 p.m.) A true treasure of Northwest Boise, Edwards Greenhouse is located at 4106 W. Sand Creek St.

5. Innovate at JUMP

Stimulate your child’s mind. Take them to the fifth annual Innovation Day at JUMP, 1000 W. Myrtle St. The free event from 2 to 5 p.m. will feature more than 100 student inventions from the 2020 Idaho Invention Convention Regional Competition. Kids can join activities, participate in demonstrations and play with cutting-edge technology. Build a tabletop Trebuchet catapult. Create a stop-motion animation story. Contribute to a massive cardboard fort build.
