Words & Deeds

This Idaho restaurant made Yelp’s list of top 100 places to eat. (Down the rabbit hole, Boise.)

An Idaho restaurant is part of a new Yelp list ranking “America’s Top Places to Eat in 2020.”

Oops, Boise — better dial up Uber Eats. The place is in Coeur d’Alene.

Ten/6, 726 N. Fourth St., finished No. 94. The small brunch spot serves a Cajun and Creole menu.

Opened in 2018, Ten/6 is named after the price tag on the Mad Hatter’s hat in Lewis Carroll’s novel “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” From rabbits to mirrors, Ten/6 has an “Alice” theme. But the menu is Creole cooking nirvana. The restaurant earned a five-star Yelp ranking after 170 reviews.

While congratulating Ten/6 for making the list, Treasure Valley foodies might also feel a little snubbed. There’s no question that Boise’s growing dining scene has improved in recent years, even if there’s still room for more ambition and diversity.

At least we have pizza joints. Lots and lots of pizza joints.

Besides, it’s not like Yelp’s honor is tantamount to a James Beard Award. (Come to think of it, Boise wasn’t nominated for any of those last year, either.)

“There’s a problem,” the Dallas Morning News complained after seven Texas eateries made Yelp’s list. “... We’ve never heard of most of these restaurants.”

Yep. That’s because this list is part analytics, part human dart tossing.

“To determine Yelp’s Top Places to Eat in 2020,” the website’s blog explains, “Yelp’s data science team pulled the top restaurants by ratings and number of reviews in 2019 across the U.S., with representation based on each place’s share of top-rated restaurants nationally, then curated the list with the expertise of our Community Managers around the country to finalize the rankings. The result is a list as quirky, interesting and unique as the Yelp Community itself.”

Are you irked that some other Idaho restaurant with a five-star Yelp rating — say, French bistro-inspired Petite 4 in Boise — didn’t make the cut? (Actually, Petite 4 made a similar Yelp Top 100 Places to Treat Yourself list last year, finishing at No. 29.)

Stuff another slice of pepperoni in your mouth and let your voice be heard. “Share your thoughts on the list on social media using #YelpTop100 ...” Yelp invites.
