91-point shootout, end of 24-game losing streak highlight Week 1 high school football
Javen Woodall hauled in a 17-yard pass from Nate Weddle with 1 minute, 43 seconds remaining, and the Meridian defense held Centennial on its final drive for a wild 46-45 victory Friday at Meridian High.
Meridian took a 24-0 lead to start the season opener for both teams but then allowed 38 straight points to let the Patriots back in the game.
“The end of the game just came down to a dogfight,” Meridian coach Porter Lacey said. “Whoever got the ball last was going to win, and fortunately our defense stood out at the end.”
Weddle led the charge for the Warriors, completing 28-of-44 passes for 338 yards and five touchdowns, plus a 3-yard rushing TD in the first quarter.
BISHOP KELLY 35, KUNA 31
Cam Foley found the end zone on a 4-yard sweep with 25 seconds left to lead Bishop Kelly to its 11th straight win over Kuna.
Bishop Kelly took a 28-12 lead in the third quarter thanks to back-to-back touchdown runs from Khalil Forehand. But Kuna rallied by scoring 19 straight points in the quarter to take a 31-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
Foley ran for 77 yards and the game-winning TD. Forehand ran for 55 yards and two scores, and BK quarterback Carter Wahl threw for 212 yards and two TDs.
Kuna’s Caden Cobb ran for a game-high 124 yards and added two TDs, while Danny Rogers completed 15-of-29 passes for 197 yards and two TDs.
A Kuna Hail Mary fell incomplete at the end of the game.
VALLIVUE 40, TWIN FALLS 7
Nick Fox led a balanced Vallivue attack with two rushing touchdowns and an interception return for a score. Falcons quarterback Lan Larison passed for 127 yards and added 74 yards and a score on the ground.

Twin Falls got its lone TD in the second quarter on a 47-yard run from Taryn Casperson.
CAPITAL 37, BORAH 19
After Borah’s Ellis Magnuson returned an interception 78 yards for the first score of the game, Capital posted 34 unanswered points to pull away from its crosstown rival.
Junior quarterback Ryan Hibbs completed 17-of-24 passes for 201 yards and one TD, and Sam Sessou-Djokoto racked up 222 rushing yards and a score as the Eagles kept the Lions off the scoreboard in the second and third quarters.
NAMPA 28, CALDWELL 13
The Bulldogs snapped their 14-game losing streak with two touchdown catches from Cade Smith. They rushed for 200 yards and only threw 12 passes, but Smith converted his chances into 32- and 37-yard touchdowns.
Caldwell quarterback Chase Burfeind contributed 132 passing yards and 83 rushing yards for the Cougars but was intercepted by Grant Roberts and Caden Draper.
This was the schools’ 112th football meeting.
COLUMBIA 22, CANYON RIDGE 14
Columbia rallied from an early deficit to open the season with a win.
SKYVIEW 47, LAKELAND 21
Skyview dominated the first half with five touchdowns and never looked back in its blowout victory over Lakeland, racking up 521 total yards, including 341 through the air.
DeMonte Horton led the scoring onslaught for Skyview with three touchdowns and 187 yards receiving, while Tyler Crowe paced the defense with six tackles. Jesse Fuentes added three tackles for loss for Skyview.
Dylan Norman recovered two fumbles for Lakeland while Logan Siegford averaged 18.3 yards per attempt on 12 passes. Issac McArthur and Josh Brandt each had touchdown receptions of over 80 yards.
MARSING 21, WENDELL 8
Marsing ended its 24-game losing streak dating back to the end of the 2013 season with a nonconference win over Wendell.
MCCALL-DONNELLY 24, OROFINO 20
The Vandals’ Stockton Raines recovered a teammate’s fumble for the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Kyle Sellers rushed for 88 yards and a TD for McCall-Donnelly. It was his fumble that Raines recovered with 4:40 to play.
WILDER 59, CASCADE 0
Pablo Martinez passed for 226 yards and four touchdowns, and Ezequiel Vargas rushed for 177 yards and two scores as the Wildcats blanked the Ramblers.
Wilder held Cascade to just 61 yards of offense and three first downs.
SALMON RIVER 50, HORSESHOE BEND 22
Canyon Harper torched the Horseshoe Bend defense for 357 rushing yards and six touchdowns to lead the defending state champions.
Junior Quade Renfro paced the Mustangs with 148 rushing yards and two TDs, a kickoff return for a score and an interception.
EMMETT 45, TIMBERLINE 24
Emmett High used a balanced attack and overcame a halftime deficit to beat Timberline in the season opener for both teams.
After being down 17-10 at halftime, Emmett scored late in the third quarter following a Timberline fumble to tie the game. The Huskies followed with two more unanswered touchdowns to take a 31-17 lead.
The Wolves cut the lead to 31-24, but Emmett responded, pushing the lead back to 14 with 1:31 left in the game. A late interception return for a touchdown sealed the win for the Huskies.
Emmett rushed for 216 yards and two touchdowns, and threw for 181 and three scores in the win.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN 43, SPANISH SPRINGS (NEV.) 0
Newly minted head coach Chris Culig got his first victory in style as the Grizzlies raced out to an early lead and never looked back at Holt Arena in Pocatello. Keegan Echevarria punched in a 1-yard rushing touchdown and Bo Stevens returned an interception for a score in the first quarter. The Grizzlies converted the two-point conversion after both scores.
Tre Page scored on the ground in the second, with another successful conversion, to gain a 24-0 halftime lead. Will McMullin added two passing touchdowns in the third quarter (85 yards to Zach Irwin and 14 yards to Jerrik Lattimer). Colby Jackson found Nick Romano for an 8-yard score in the fourth.
The Grizzlies defense was already in midseason form, holding Spanish Springs to 151 total yards. Rocky Mountain hosts Capital on Friday.
RIDGEVUE 14, BOISE 10
Austin Forrest’s 95-yard kickoff return in the third quarter set up the winning touchdown for Ridgevue — a Michael Sondermann 3-yard run — as the Warhawks won late Thursday night at Dona Larsen Park.
The game was delayed one hour, 19 minutes due to lightning. Ridgevue opened the scoring on its first play from scrimmage with a 61-yard double pass from Gino Camario to Colton Crawford to John Bataluna.
The Warhawks pulled out the win despite being held to 129 yards of offense.
