The American Red Cross has issued an emergency request for blood and platelet donations.
The Red Cross said in a news release Tuesday that the blood supply nationally is down about 39,000 donations. The organization thinks summer vacations and a decrease in blood drives have resulted in the shortage.
Jan Hale, a Red Cross representative, said in the release that the donations are not keeping up with hospitals’ demands. She said “donations are urgently needed now to meet the needs of hospital patients in the coming days and weeks.”
According to the release, 650 fewer blood drives are schedule this week because of Independence Day vacations.
Donors can schedule an appointment or find a drive by visiting www.redcrossblood.org, or by calling 800-733-2767.
